Projections: Clean Energy and Solar Power to Dominate Global Markets by 2025

According to an analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable energy sources—including solar photovoltaics (PV)—and nuclear power are projected to become the world’s primary sources of electricity generation in the coming years.

"We are close to a tipping point for power sector emissions," stated Fatih Birol, the IEA Executive Director.

By 2025, the IEA forecasts that renewable energy (including solar) will account for 35% of global electricity generation. This will surpass coal-fired power, which is expected to decline to 33% during the same period. Meanwhile, nuclear energy is projected to experience gradual growth, accounting for approximately 10% of global output, while natural gas will constitute 20%.

Currently, most nations are striving to fulfill the mandates of The Paris Agreement, aimed at mitigating global warming and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Climate Challenges and Energy Security

Despite the positive outlook, escalating climate change continues to impact the production of wind, solar, and hydroelectric power. Hydroelectric plants, in particular, were severely affected last year by droughts across the United States, Europe, and China. Similarly, droughts hindered nuclear power production in France, as several plants rely on river water to cool their reactors.

Furthermore, extreme weather conditions are driving up electricity demand as people seek to regulate indoor temperatures. This heightened demand increases the risk of grid instability and power outages during periods of extreme heat or cold.

The Urgency of Transition

As both electricity supply and demand become increasingly dependent on weather patterns, the pressure to accelerate the transition toward clean and renewable energy, such as solar power, has intensified significantly.
